Return of a WW Reject

Monday - April 12, 2021

I have been struggling to get blog posts written.  I sit down to write them and they end up being so long because of all the thoughts trolling through my head.  I don't have to the time to write a novel and no one wants to be reading for days (assuming there is an audience).  I have determined that I will try to write a little everyday to share a few thoughts and document a bit about my journey to better health.

Today, I will tell you my dirty little secret!  Back in October, while I was on a lacrosse trip with my son, I signed up for Weight Watchers (or WW as the cool kids call it).   I signed up while I was eating chips in a hotel room sulking because none of the clothes I brought fit comfortably.  I was miserable and felt like a stuffed sausage.  I didn't get very far as I followed it for a bout a week and then fell off the wagon.  I am not sure what derailed me but I proceeded to put on about 10 more pounds by the end of 2020.  The only thing I lost was money!

I was just about to cancel my membership because I have not done anything with it for 6 months!  But a little voice inside my head to me to keep it.  So...I decided to keep it.  I have a lot of weight to lose and if I can use this program to at least get me started, I will be happy.   The other dirty little secret I have is that this is not the only time I have joined WW.  This is probably my 10th time.   In my previous attempts I have tried to manipulate the program and make my own rules.  Obviously that was a bad idea.  With that decision, I am requiring myself to be all in and follow the program as it is designed.

I do know that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing and expecting the same results.  I know this time HAS to be different.  I have hit numbers on the scale that I've never seen and my blood work is throwing red flags.  While a large part of my motivation is vanity, I am at the age where I need  to take control over my health. I am having "old people" issues that could be reversed by cleaning up my diet.

Like everything, this program has some pros and cons.

  • It is easy! No food is off limits and every food has a points value
  • Zero Point Foods - There are a lot of zero point foods that you can eat when you are out of points.  It is clean food so it encourages healthy choices
  • Affordable - It is about $15 bucks a month.  And it is even more affordable because my work will reimburse me for a portion of the monthly subscription
  • Quick audio tips that address topics like stress eating or late night snacking
  • Connect feature to see what other members are up to
  • Friends in real life are doing this program
  • Activity points see to add up fast and you can eat them
  • Points add up fast!!  You really need to plan on this program because if you don't you end up over eating
  • Booze is high in points!  I am a hockey mom, of course I drink
  • I am not a fan of the mobile App and the website is worse.  My experience is that the website is stripped down and the app is too busy and not super intuitive
  • I am limited to what I can eat on the zero point food list.  This will probably be a post for another time but I am a freak of nature.  I am allergic to:  Poultry, shellfish, gluten, diary, nuts, and most fruit.  The program allows for all the chicken I could eat but I need to capture my points for beef and pork.  Boo!!!

With that introduction, I officially kicked off my restart.  I am allowed 28 points in a day.  That seems like it is a lot compared to my friends that are also doing the program.  I ate every last one of them and I even planned to use 7 points for 2/3 c. of Ice cream.  I am trying to make better decisions based on the points value of the food and taking advantage of the zero point foods I can eat.

If you are doing WW, follow me on the App.  my community name is "Pretzel171625".  I'd love to connect.  Also....the opinions above are my own and this is not an endorsement for WW.
